Reps halt sack of 2,000 varsity staff Schools teachers

The House of Representatives has directed the Federal Government to halt the mass retrenchment of Teachers and Workers of University Staff Secondary Schools and Primary Schools across the country.

The leadership of Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) had on the 24th December 2015, embarked on nationwide industrial action over the planned sack of the teachers and workers.

The directive to government to stop the sacking of the teachers was part of the resolution in a motion ‘under matters of urgent national importance’ sponsored by Babatunde Kolawole (APC-Ondo).

The House mandated its committee on Tertiary Education to meet with the Minister of Education “to throw light on the policy somersault and hasty decision of government to throw out thousands of workers from gainful employment.”

The lawmaker who called for the intervention of the House, argued that sack of productive Nigerian teachers contradicts the proposed recruitment of 500,000 teachers by President Buhari’s administration.

Kolawole noted that teachers and general workers of University Staff Secondary Schools and Primary Schools are employees of the government of the federation through the Universities that engaged their services.

He said, “These teachers and general workers have long been engaged and have put in many years in the service of their fatherland ranging between 10 years and 30 years or more in the case of some of them.”

Kolawole noted with concern “ the recent Government policy of divesting itself from the University staff secondary schools and primary schools funding with the attendant implication of laying off all the teachers and general workers of these schools.”

The lawmaker who expressed concern over the plight of the workers, argued that “the economic reality of the moment and the general economic hardship people are going through today in Nigeria as a result of lack of gainful employment and underemployment,” will be worsened by the decision of the government to close all these schools.

The House urged Federal Government to make efforts to absorb teachers and workers already affected into the mainstream University staff pool.

Buhari Rejects Devaluation Of Naira, Says “I Won’t Kill The Naira”

President Muhammadu Buhari declared late Wednesday in Nairobi that he was yet to be convinced that Nigeria and its people will derive any tangible benefit from an official devaluation of the Naira.

Speaking at an interactive meeting with Nigerians living in Kenya, President Buhari maintained that while export-driven economies could benefit from devaluation of their currencies, devaluation will only result infurther inflation and hardship for the poor and middle classes in Nigeria’s import-dependent economy.

The President added that he had no intention of bringing further hardship on the country’s poor who, he said, have suffered enough already.

Likening devaluing the Naira to having it “killed”, President Buhari said that proponents of devaluation will have to work much harder to convince him that ordinary Nigerians will gain anything from it.

The President also rejected suggestions that the Central Bank of Nigeria should resume the sale of foreign exchange to Bureaux de Change (BDCs), saying that the Bureau de Change business had become a scam and a drain on the economy.

“We had just 74 of the bureaux in 2005, now they have grown to about 2,800,” President Buhari noted.

He alleged that some bank and government officials used surrogates to run the BDCs and prosper at public expense by obtaining foreign exchange from government at official rates and selling it at much higher rates.

“We will use our foreign exchange for industry, spare parts and the development of needed infrastructure.

“We don’t have the Dollars to give to the BDCs. Let them go and get it from wherever they can, other than the Central Bank,” President Buhari told the gathering.

The President reaffirmed his conviction that about a third of petroleum subsidy payments under the previous administration was bogus.

“They just stamped papers and collected our foreign exchange,” he said.

The President appealed to Nigerians studying abroad to bear with his administration as it strives to address the challenges they are facing as a result of new foreign exchange measures.

He said that he was optimistic that the Nigerian economy will stabilize soon with the efficient implementation of measures and policies that have been introduced by his administration.

Apple Introduces The iPhone 6S And iPhone 6S Plus (See Stunning Photos)

Today, Apple has unveiled the latest generation of the iPhone in the form of the iPhone 6S and the iPhone 6S Plus. Rumors have been swirling for the past few months, with suggestions that Apple would integrate a Force Touch Display, update the devices’ cameras, and use a more powerful processor.

But the moment of truth has finally arrived, so let’s get to it.

As can be expected from an ‘S’ year, the next-generation iPhones don’t look all that different from last year’s models. However, the innards have been significantly tweaked.

Design
Following rumors, the next iPhone will come in a rose gold color, and all iPhone models are made with a brand new Apple custom alloy, the same alloys used in the aerospace industry. The Apple team has also introduced a new type of stronger gla$$ for the display.

3D Touch
Apple has introduced a feature called 3D Touch, which shows an extra dimension to the screen you’re used to. Using Force Touch, which is already available on the Apple Watch and on new MacBooks, users can hold down on various apps to both ‘peek’ and ‘pop’.

For example, you could lightly tap on the content of an email to peek at the content inside, and if you press harder, the content you’re peeking at will pop open fully.

As is standard with Force Touch, the iPhone will offer haptic feedback as a part of the 3D Touch experience.

A few examples of 3D Touch on the iPhone include: lightly tap on the camera icon to get camera options, and press harder to go straight into selfie mode, lightly tap on various app to choose to go into various parts of the app, lightly tap on a flight number and get flight tracking information as a ‘peek’, or Force Touch an address to get a preview within the Maps app.

It’s not just default Apple apps that use Force Touch — Instagram, Facebook and others have integrated 3D Touch into their apps to let you peek and pop.

Latest Crunch Report
Users can also employ Force Touch to switch between apps instead of using the old double-tap on the home button. Simply Force Touch the edge of the display and swipe between previously opened apps.

This is made possible with the addition of an array of sensors added right under the display.

A9
The new A9, found in the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus, is the third generation of the 64-bit chip Apple has been using, built with a new transistor architecture. It’s 70 percent faster than the A8 chip used in the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, and 90 percent faster graphics performance than the previous generation.

Alongside the new A9, the new iPhones will feature a brand new M9 coprocessor that is always on, to help detect motion for apps like Health. Thanks to the new processors, TouchID is twice as fast in the new phones.

Camera
For the first time in years, Apple is adding more megapixels to the iPhone camera, offering a 12-megapixel camera. That’s a 50 percent improvement from earlier generations of the iSight camera.

But in order to avoid trading off more pixels for lower image quality, Apple has introduced ‘deep trench isolation’, which separates photo diodes to help maintain accurate color quality and reduce crosstalk and noise.

The new iSight camera still protrudes slightly from the body of the phone, just as it does on the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus.

Beyond still imagery, the new iSight camera is also capable of taking 4K video, which means each frame has 8 million pixels.

Plus, the front-facing camera has been upgraded to a 5-megapixel camera. And for selfie fans out there, Apple has added a new front-facing flash feature that uses the LED screen to mimic a TrueTone flash that you’d find on the back of the camera. The display also gets 3X brighter right at the moment of capture (similar to Photo Booth on OS X) so that there is enough light for your Kardashian-style shots.

Google may not manufacture its own cars after all, but rather team up with Ford to build its self-driving vehicles.

The two companies will announce that they are pairing up to make piloted cars during next month’s Consumer Electronics Show, Yahoo Autos reports.

Although that report is still unverified, the Ford partnership could add validity.

Chances are good the scoop is true, however. In November, Ford Executive Chairman Bill Ford Jr. said that the carmaker would need to pair with big tech companies in order to survive the coming series of revolutions facing the transportation industry.

If Google and Ford do team up, the move could signal that people inside Google realized that manufacturing a car from scratch was unfeasible — or at least far too costly. Rather than using Ford to make its own pod cars like the one pictured above. It’s instead likely that Google will just utilize Ford cars for its own aspirations.

In terms of a timeline, if the report is true, you can expect to see the fruits of this endeavor within a few years — if not sooner.

This likely won’t be the only pairing Google makes with a carmaker. Just as it has done with smartphone manufacturers, the company could become the brains behind all kinds of self-driving cars while it leaves the hardware to someone else.

Lawmaker distributes 450 bags of rice to constituents

Nnewi— A member of Anambra State House of
Assembly, Mr. Pascal Agbodike, has distributed 450
bags of rice, some cartons of groundnut oil and
tomatoes to members of his Ihiala II
constituency. The ceremony took place at his Umuhu
Mbosi home, Ihiala Local Government Area of the
state. He also feted nursery and primary school pupils
of St Patrick’s Catholic Church, Mbosi, and distributed
some education materials to the school children.
Agbodike, who is the Deputy Majority Leader and
Chairman, Youths & Sports Committee in the House,
represents Okija, Orsumoghu, Azia, Mbosi, Isseke, Lilu
and Ubulu-Isiuzo among other towns. In his speech,
Monsignor Michael Onyekachi, the Priest in charge of
St Patrick’s, praised the lawmaker for his
magnanimity, adding that Agbodike had never hidden
his love for his people, particularly the less-privileged
among them.
Speaking on the occasion, Agbodike thanked the
priest and the Rev. Sisters for organising and
imparting the required knowledge to the children for
the good of the society and re-iterated his willingness
to continue supporting education programmes of the
pupils and other students at both the secondary and
tertiary levels through his Mirioma Education
Foundation.
According to him, over 100 youths from Ihiala II
constituency will benefit from his scholarship scheme
at the end of his four years in the House. He then
appealed to parents to always encourage their
children to acquire Western education, which he
stressed, “makes a man virtuous and affords him
many opportunities in life.”
Also, speaking, the President-General of Mbosi Town
Union, Mr George Obizulike, expressed gratitude to
the 11 wards that make up Ihiala II constituency for
supporting Agbiodike and assured that the lawmaker
would not disappoint them, instead he will always

The battle to curtail the outbreak of Lassa Fever has continued in Lagos and at least 7,243 rats were killed yesterday at eight major markets in the state under the de-rat market programme.
